Celebrity engagement rings / Grace Kelly
In short: Grace Kelly’s famous engagement ring is a 10.47 carat emerald-cut diamond with two baguette diamonds in platinum, by Cartier. Prince Rainier III of Monaco gave it to her in January 1956, replacing an earlier ruby and diamond band. It is still held by the Prince’s Palace of Monaco.
The ring
To scale
From above, it covers roughly 4.1× the area of a typical 1 carat round diamond. Drawn from the reported weight and typical proportions for the cut, so treat it as a close estimate.
The story
Prince Rainier’s first ring for Grace Kelly was a Cartier eternity band of alternating rubies and diamonds. It was soon replaced by the emerald-cut diamond that became famous, and they married in April 1956.
She wore the ring on screen in her last film, High Society (1956). It has appeared in Cartier exhibitions on loan from the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, which still owns it.
What it means for you: this is the ring that made the emerald cut a classic. Emerald cuts show clarity more than any other shape, so a stone this size had to be exceptionally clean. At an everyday size, go for VS1 clarity or better.
