How Hatton Garden compares

A certified 1ct round, G colour, VS2 clarity, excellent cut, in an 18ct white gold solitaire, typically costs £3,900–£5,600 natural or £1,650–£2,850 lab-grown in Hatton Garden. The lowest online listings are usually lower grades or 9ct–14ct gold, so compare like for like with our price checker.

Watch the “was” prices

  • High-street chains often show a “regular” price far above the sale price: one listed a 1ct platinum solitaire at £6,000 against a “regular” £15,000, another £5,499 against £12,199.
  • Many listings don’t say whether the diamond is natural or lab-grown. We left those out of the figures above.

Method

How the index is built

  • Diamond and gemstone prices are UK retail listings from Google search and shopping results, collected through DataForSEO. We keep only listings whose title states the carat of the centre stone and whether it is natural or lab-grown, and exclude silver, simulants, total-weight and multi-stone rings, sets and category pages. We report the median because a few very high or very low listings would distort an average.
  • They are online prices, not shop quotes. Listings mix colour and clarity grades and 9ct to 18ct gold. Our Hatton Garden figures come from the same model as our price checker. Once our Hatton Garden mystery shop is published, we'll add written quotes from jewellers for one fixed specification.
  • Search demand is UK Google search volume from DataForSEO, summed over three months and shown as each item's share of its group.
  • Gold is the live spot price in pounds (gold-api.com), multiplied by purity.
  • Every edition is kept. From the next edition, each figure will show its change since the last quarter.
