Buying his and hers wedding rings

Matching wedding rings don’t have to be identical. Most couples choose the same metal and finish in two different widths. Here’s what a pair really costs, and how to match them well.

How much of the price is metal?

A pair of 18ct gold bands (a 2.5–3mm and a 5–6mm) weighs about 12g (the middle of 19 weights published by UK jewellers). At today's price, the gold in it is worth about £915, roughly 37% of a typical £2,474 price. The rest is making, finishing, hallmarking, VAT and margin. A heavier band in the same style costs more for exactly this reason, and when the metal price moves, band prices follow.

Width and shape

Width: usually 2–3mm for her, 4–6mm for him

Matching rings don’t need to be the same width. The same metal, colour and finish in two widths reads as a pair, and suits two different hands.

The four band shapes, seen end-on

Court

Domed outside and curved inside, so it slides over the knuckle easily. The most comfortable.

Flat court

Flat outside, curved inside. The modern look of a flat band with the comfort of a court.

D-shape

Domed outside, flat inside. The traditional British wedding band shape.

Flat

Flat inside and out, with square edges. Modern and crisp, but the least comfortable to wear.

Before you buy

What to decide, and what to check

Match what you’ll notice

Metal colour and finish (polished, brushed or hammered) are what make two rings look like a set. Width and profile can differ.

Her engagement ring decides her band

If she wears an engagement ring, her band has to sit flush with it, which may mean a curved or shaped band. Choose that first, then match his to it.

Engrave them

A shared date or line inside both rings is the simplest way to make two different bands a matching pair. Most jewellers add it for a small fee.
