Choosing a men’s wedding ring

A men’s wedding ring is the one piece of jewellery many men will wear every day for life. Here’s what they really cost, how much of that is metal, and the width, shape and metal decisions that matter.

In short: A plain 18ct gold men’s wedding ring typically costs about £1,700 in the UK, and platinum about the same. Titanium and tungsten bands cost around £100 but can’t be resized. Most men choose a 4–6mm court band, which is the most comfortable shape.

Only four plain platinum men’s bands had a clear price, so treat that row as a guide. Retailers’ own ranges for men’s platinum bands run from about £440 to £3,750. Heavier bands in the same width cost more: “super heavy” and “extra heavy” in a title means more metal.

How much of the price is metal?

A 5–6mm 18ct gold men’s band in sizes R to T weighs about 8.5g (the middle of 10 weights published by UK jewellers). At today's price, the gold in it is worth about £648, roughly 38% of a typical £1,699 price. The rest is making, finishing, hallmarking, VAT and margin. A heavier band in the same style costs more for exactly this reason, and when the metal price moves, band prices follow.

Width and shape

Width: most men choose 4–6mm

Men’s bands run from about 3mm to 8mm. In the listings we checked, 4–6mm was by far the most common. Wider bands feel tighter, so many jewellers suggest going up half a size for 7mm and above.

The four band shapes, seen end-on

Court

Domed outside and curved inside, so it slides over the knuckle easily. The most comfortable.

D-shape

Domed outside, flat inside. The traditional British wedding band shape.

Flat court

Flat outside, curved inside. The modern look of a flat band with the comfort of a court.

Flat

Flat inside and out, with square edges. Modern and crisp, but the least comfortable to wear.

Before you buy

What to decide, and what to check

Gold, platinum or something else?

18ct gold is the classic. Platinum is heavier and naturally white, and wears without needing re-plating. Titanium and tungsten cost far less, but neither can be resized, and tungsten is brittle: in an emergency it has to be cracked off rather than cut.

Weight matters as much as width

Two 6mm bands can differ by several grams of gold. Ask for the weight in grams, not just “light”, “heavy” or “super heavy”, so you can compare like with like.

Black rings

Most black wedding rings are tungsten, ceramic or black-plated titanium. Plating can wear through over time; ask whether the black is plated or the material itself.

Common Questions

How much should a men’s wedding ring cost?+

In UK listings we checked in October 2026, a plain 18ct gold men’s band typically cost about £1,700 (range £650–£3,500), platinum about £1,725, and titanium or tungsten about £100. Width and weight make the biggest difference.

What width should a men’s wedding ring be?+

Most men choose 4–6mm. Wider bands look bolder but feel tighter, so consider half a size up for 7mm or more. Try a few widths on before you decide.

Can titanium and tungsten wedding rings be resized?+

No. Neither can be resized, so if your finger size changes you need a new ring. Gold and platinum can usually be resized by a size or two.
